Port activities require continuous or occasional dredging of considerable quantities of sediments : approximately 50 million m3 along the French coastline. A large proportion of the dredgings is authorized for dumping at sea in geographically delimited areas and following an impact evaluation of their potential harmfulness to the marine environment. The environmental risks assessment linked to dredging operations relies on knowledge related to several scientific disciplines contributing to changes in the regulations. This work, intended both for managers and for environmental scientists and engineers, is designed to take stock of the current state-of-the-art in the field of sediment contamination and related ecotoxicological hazards, along with a review of... |

This document was drawn up by a working group and based upon forecasting considerations concerning the Atlantic seaboard. Within can be found a summary of different issues affecting the coastline : inputs, estuaries, green tides, spreading species, wetlands, state of biological resources, sand and gravel as well as hydrocarbon extraction, development consequences, coastline evolution, littoral landscapes, large-size debris. This report summarizes coastline monitoring as well : the marine national monitoring network, microbiological surveillance of beaches and zones of shellfish production, plytoplankton monitoring, shellfish growth. Lastly, this document discusses proposed actions for the improvement of water quality by the Water Agencies of... |

The increase in the number of marinas and the problems that they pose has prompted Ifremer to analyse the consequences of these structures on the coastal environment. This report reviews the impacts associated with the construction and the operation of marinas. Some simple measures are proposed to reduce the inconveniences and ensure the compatibility of pleasure boating with other traditional activities. Most of all, these measures seek to reconcile the existence of marinas with environmental protection. This report is intended, in particular, for spatial planners and those responsible for protecting the coastal environment: representatives of administrative bodies; national, local, county ("department") and regional governments; organisations and... |
